Which Ingredients Secretly Contain Gluten?

So, you’ve done your research and believe you may have gluten sensitivity. A particular symptom made you curious, you did your research, and are willing to give it a shot. Now what?!

Personally, after doing a small amount of research about what foods contain gluten, I became overwhelmed. There are so many ingredients that contain gluten, and reading through an ingredients list is like reading another language.

Does anyone know what any of these are? How do you know which ones to avoid, and which ones are alright for consumption?

According to an article titled “What Foods Have Gluten?” published by Wake The Wolves, ingredients that contain gluten are “all purpose flour, artificial flavoring/natural flavoring, barley, bread crumbs, brewer’s yeast, bulgar / bulgar wheat, caramel color, dextrin, durum, glucose syrup, hydrolyzed wheat protein, kamut, malt, malt syrup, (or anything that says malt), matzo, modified starch, modified wheat starch, monosodium glutamate (MSG), oats (unless it’s certified gluten-free), rye, seitan, semolina, spelt, surumi, textured vegetable protein, tricticale, tricticum, vegetable gum, wheat berries, and wheat germ.”

That’s quite the list, isn’t it? Are you feeling overwhelmed yet? So am I.

There are many other foods to avoid when embarking on the gluten-free journey, most of them being processed. Also, drinking alcoholic beverages usually means you are drinking gluten, so do your research before taking a sip of your next drink.

Basically, if you’re going to be going on a gluten-free diet, you get nothing out of a bag or box (unless it is marked gluten-free). This really simplifies things, and erases the threat of other unhealthy, artificial ingredients in the process.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, and high quality meats will be your best friend and the stars of every meal, which is fantastic! By following this diet, not only will your symptoms of gluten intolerance vanish, but you will be sky-rocketed into good health, and a long existence on this planet.
